Room Tour: Our Eclectic Kids Playroom

As our daughter has evolved in the last 5 and a half years, so has her playroom.

Initially, I tried to stick to a full black and white monochrome theme in here, but something was missing.

Duh. It was colour! 🌈

We recently gave the playroom another mini makeover, so hopefully it stays this way for a while!

Here’s a tour through her playroom.

Peg Rail Book Ledge

This wall space was underutilised before, so we wanted to make it not just prettier, but also more functional.

We decided to install low wall panelling  tick the pretty box, but instead of finishing it off with traditional chair rail moulding, we made a peg rail for a fun storage idea!

We used easyVJ60 panels by Easycraft, which you can source and have cut at Bunnings. We needed 2.5 panels to complete the whole wall.

We used these hook racks from Bunnings to form a peg rail, plus a few planks of pine to form the book ledge.

All of this was painted in Dulux Whimsy, which is the cutest baby blue.

I’ve decorated the ledge with a very aesthetic collection of Little People Big Dreams books. You’ll more than likely find these books in most homes with small children, especially those with influencer or influenced parents 😉

Kaia loves to hang all sorts of things off the peg rails; her camera, handbags, Polly Pockets… anything that can hang will hang!

All the art on this wall is by Melbourne designer and fellow interiors Instagrammer Cass Danson (you must follow @our.home.le.fleur if you love colour, especially pastels!)

She really has a knack for meshing cute with cool – her designs are perfect for playrooms and kids bedrooms, but they’re also great for grown-ups that love colour.

Cass also sells some of her artwork as digital downloads, so I purchased PDFs on her website and printed them locally.

I downloaded five digital files and had them printed at my local printer, but Officeworks can do this for you too.

I printed her Rock n Roll poster, which I displayed with a Wood Poster Hanger from Amazon. Beside that is her Love Cats poster, with a simple Kmart frame.

On the other side of the wall, I framed Cass’ Strawberry Baby and Yee-Haw posters with thrifted IKEA frames and just popped them on the ledge instead of hanging them.

I also went crazy with her fabric decals! I got the Mix Bag and Pink Squiggle decals, which are removable. Removable wall decals are a great way to decorate kids rooms, since their interests and tastes change so frequently. They won’t leave damage on your walls and they’re fun to put up!

Tiger Rug

We wanted a really fun rug in here, but nothing too cutesy because we didn’t want to replace it too soon.

When I came across the blue Chinoserie Tiger Rug from Maia Homes, I had to have it! It matches the wall colour perfectly and will still be easy to style when Kaia’s a little older. And if not, it’s grown up enough for me to use in another room.

Maia Homes have the coolest, most maximalist rugs ever. The trippy black and white rug in our library is from Maia Homes too.

Playroom Desk

I found a gorgeous mid-century modern desk for $50 on Facebook Marketplace and paired it with a thrifted Victoria Ghost chair. To repeat the royal blue already in the room, I got a PRUNKHALLON mirror from Ikea and added a hanging string to it to suit the other wall hangings.

Beside her desk she has a little green art cart, filled with pencils, markers, gemstones, colouring books and all her craft gear. Adding this was a gamechanger; she’s definitely a lot more engaged in crafts now that everything is stored in the one place.

On the other side of her desk we’ve got this cute bucket chair (which is a replica Roly Poly) by Jellybean Interiors.

I’m obsessed with the confetti pattern on it; it’s so fun for a playroom! They make these in kids and adult sizes (this is the adult size, perfect for me to watch her draw) and they can be used outdoors too. The soft little strawberry cushion is from Adairs, which just opened down the road from us! 🍓

Playroom Storage & Accessories

The IKEA Kallax cubes have been in here since the get go, but they’ve recently relocated to this new spot.

We upgraded them with Kallax drawer inserts and doors, and replaced the stock standard knobs with cute colourful mismatched knobs from Perth vintage store Annie’s Collective Wonderland.

Of course, like any good Aussie kid, there’s a Bluey House on it!

She’s also really into her Toniebox! I painted a Kmart lazy susan with leftover royal blue paint and attached some adhesive magnets to it so she can store her Toniebox in the middle and all her magnetic Tonies (they’re little audio figurines of her favourite characters) around it.

My WFH desk used to be where the Kallax cubes are, but when we removed all of that the floor space felt a bit empty.

So I wanted to add a cute big floor cushion. This soccer ball floor cushion from Target was the perfect size and is a nice little callback to the black and white wallpaper.

On the chevron wallpapered wall, we have a couple of thrifted wall hanging shelves for storing her mini Disney Princess figurines and a collection of Hello Kitty’s I bought in Japan way before she was born.

There’s an IKEA step stool painted in British Paints Ocean Charm, which we use as a plant stand for this amazing Third Drawer Down Ice-cream Planter from Amazon.

We’ve also hung Cass Danson’s original Midnight Bloom painting alongside her Blue Tigers poster.

I love the colour Yves Klein Blue so much, so I’m pretty sure this original painting was meant for me!

We also recently got a red kit cat clock! 😍

I bought this cos I have always really wanted one, but visually it just made the most sense in here. His eyes and tail tick along with the seconds which irritates Martin to no end, but I just think it’s the coolest! This one is from Oh Clocks; I hear you can swap out his little bow and accessorise him, so I’ll definitely be looking into that!

We also just scored the new rollie bin from Jellybean Interiors. MISMATCHEDHOME10 gets you 20% off this too!

This bin fits sooo much stuff, including her not-so-aesthetic Barbie dreamhouse 😅

Curtains

Previously, we had some cheap white curtains here that barely covered the window, so I really wanted to replace them with something that covered more of the wall too.

🎬 WATCH: Hang curtains high and wide

While we were at it, I thought we might as well add a bit more colour too!

I ordered plenty of free samples from Blinds Online and landed on this beautiful classic William Morris ‘Willow‘ pattern in the Clover colourway.

I have so many samples now for future interior design jobs – you can order up to 20 for free!

These curtains are s-fold, which means they always hang perfectly folded. They’re also light filtering so they still let in a little sunlight.

We’ve got white timber venetian blinds for the room too but we haven’t gotten around to hanging them just yet.

A fun playroom for a five-year-old

So that’s our little playroom!

This room has been tweaked pretty much every year, and I’m sure it’ll continue to change as she goes through primary school, becomes a tween and eventually (but hopefully not too soon) a teen!

If she’s anything like I was when I was teen, one day it might be dark and moody!

When she grows up a bit, we’d love to get a projector and a little sofa in here so she can have her own little living room! But for now, this is the perfect space for crafting, practicing handstands, and just being a soon-to-be six year old.
